The Peugeot Partner and Citroen Berlingo are everywhere in Greater Manchester — plumbers, electricians, couriers, cleaners and caterers all rely on them. Their bigger siblings, the Peugeot Expert and Citroen Dispatch (and the related Toyota Proace), do the same job with more space. They are tough vans, but they spend their lives loaded, in traffic and on hill starts, and the clutch takes the brunt of it. When it goes, the van stops earning, so we treat these jobs with the urgency they deserve.
One van, two badges
The Partner and Berlingo are built side by side and share their engines, gearboxes and clutch parts. The same is true of the Expert and Dispatch. Whichever badge is on the front, the work is the same. Over the years these vans have used several versions of the 1.6 HDi, the 1.6 and 1.5 BlueHDi diesels and smaller petrol engines, and the clutch kit changes with the engine and gearbox. We confirm both codes from the van itself before ordering, which is the main reason our vans go back the same day rather than waiting on a wrong part.
Signs your van's clutch is on its way out
- The biting point has crept right to the top of the pedal travel
- Revs flare without the van picking up speed, especially loaded or on a hill
- A burning smell after a hill start with weight in the back
- Judder pulling away, or a rattle at idle that stops when you press the pedal
- Gears becoming harder to select, particularly first and reverse
A slipping clutch on a loaded van gets worse quickly, because every slip generates more heat and glazes the friction plate further. If you are getting a hot smell on hill starts, our page on clutch burning smell explains what is happening and how long you are likely to have.
Dual mass or solid flywheel?
Many diesel Partners, Berlingos, Experts and Dispatches use a dual mass flywheel, but not every version does. We check what your van has and measure a dual mass unit against its tolerances before quoting. On high-mileage vans that have done a lot of loaded urban work, the flywheel is often worn by the time the clutch is, and the symptoms — knocking at idle, judder on take-up, a clunk on and off the throttle — overlap with clutch wear. Our dual mass flywheel replacement page explains the checks in detail. If the flywheel is fine, it goes back in.
What we check on every Peugeot and Citroen van clutch
- Flywheel condition and, on dual mass units, free play and rock against spec
- Release bearing and slave cylinder or clutch cable, depending on the setup
- Rear crankshaft oil seal for leaks that would contaminate the new clutch
- Gearbox mounts and driveshaft joints, which take extra punishment on loaded vans
- Gear linkage cables, which can make selection stiff even with a good clutch
Why vans wear clutches faster than cars
A van with half a tonne of tools and stock in the back asks a lot more of its clutch on every pull-away than a car on the same engine. Add multi-drop delivery work — dozens of stops a day — plus Manchester's hills and traffic, and it is common to see a Partner or Berlingo needing a clutch at 50,000 to 70,000 miles. Towing a trailer brings that forward further. None of this means you are driving badly; it is simply the job.
Small habits do help: use first gear for every pull-away, avoid holding the van on the clutch at junctions, and use the handbrake on hill starts rather than slipping the clutch for long periods. If your van is a Ford, our Ford Transit clutch page covers that range, and Mercedes owners should see our Sprinter and Vito clutch page.
Van clutch replacement costs
As a guide, a Partner or Berlingo clutch kit typically costs £450 to £650 fitted. Expert and Dispatch vans usually sit a little higher, around £550 to £800. Where a dual mass flywheel is fitted and worn, add roughly £300 to £600. These are indicative figures; you get one fixed price covering parts and labour after we have road-tested and inspected the van. Our clutch cost guide explains what moves the price between vehicles.
Keeping trades and fleets moving
Tell us it is a working van when you book. We will source the parts for your exact engine and gearbox in advance, book you in early and aim to have the van back the same working day. For small fleets we can give fixed prices per van and stagger work so you are never short of vehicles.
